The House of Givenchy

Season: F/W 2012

Location: Paris
Givenchy has been through quite the power struggle, from its founder Hubert de Givenchy, who retired in 95,' [after a brand estimated net worth of $176 million in 93'!] ownership taken by luxury goods conglomerate, LVMH, to A John Galliano take-over following Givenchy's retirement in 95'-who was subsequently promoted to sister-LVMH brand, Christain Dior, calling for the hiring of Alexander McQueen.  In 01' designer, Julien McDonald came on as the Artistic Director of the couture and rtw women's lines.  There was a menswear relaunch in Spring 05'  by designer, Ozwald Boateng  and designer, Ricardo Tisi took the helm of both collections in 05'. "No one man should have all that power."- Kanye West.

Whomever the King, the brand has maintained its aesthetic and signature goth, dark, sexy and sometimes provocative look, pushing the boundaries of silhouettes and style worn by royalties from Audrey Hepburn to Kanye West.  This season the brand used prints and silhouettes to maintain that signature Givenchy aesthetic.  The "Parisian Club Kid" look was executed in a strict and stark black, navy, red and cognac color story with star and studded embellishments, leather pants and jackets, star and animal printed jumpers (crew-neck sweaters) and t-shirts, double-breasted suits, and kilts (More on the Kilt below).  The line shows cohesion and impeccable styling, notice the mouth-piece worn by all models.

The Kilt, which is traditional scottish garb worn by boys and men from the 16th century, is Givenchy's creative way of playing with silhouettes and tailoring.  If you were wondering where the flannel or button front shirt around the waist trend came from, seen on Rihanna, Kanye West and others,  you can attribute it to these designs. I would never wear a kilt...

Because there are traditions there that I do not want to question personally, but I do love the idea and would definitely style someone else in the look.  Men wearing kilts is like the menswear inspired womenswear trend-that I am sure we'll be seeing a lot of in the coming years.

**This leather jumper is my favorite of the collection.  The design and details really speaks to me and I can think of 10 ways off the top of my head to style this jumper.  Pair this piece with light distressed denim for a juxtaposed look. **
